DIY: Mini Faux-Terrarium Tutorial

A long title for an amazing little project. Quick and easy - the perfect little weekend make.

Isn't this just the cutest?

  • Glass Jar (I used an old Ikea spice jar) The bigger the lid/neck the better
  • Floral Oasis (3 disks for £1.59 in Hobbycraft. I used 1/2 a disk)
  • A scrap of fabric. I chose hessian.
  • Pretty things to add to your terrarium. The bird is an ex-Christmas decoration and the flowers are from the wedding aisle of Hobbycraft (£1.49 for about 12 wire stems I think) Fern leaves were cut from plastic flowers.
Cut the oasis to size. It will need to be a little smaller than the inside of the lid. I also sliced my oasis disk to half the depth. Wrap your fabric around the oasis and secure with a pin. You will want to check that the lid closes before you go any further.

Attach some greenery. This was a leaf cut from some artificial flowers. I stuck it into the oasis by bending some wire (cut from the stem of the small flowers) and wrapping it around the base. The wire sticks securely into the oasis. The bird already had bendy wire fixings (for a Christmas tree) He fitted in nicely, just off centre.    *take note of the dimensions of your glass - make sure it's not too tall / wide*
Make sure you are happy with your design from all angles.
Stick oasis to the lid. I used a glue gun, but superglue should work too.

Be careful not to squash anything when you screw on your lid.

Stand back and admire your work!

I love my new little creation (it's quite difficult to photograph with the funny angles on the glass) and I really have got the bug to make more. There are numerous jars (rescued from the recycling) that are having their labels soaked off as we speak.

If you have a go at making one of these little lovelies, let me know - I'd love to see a photo.
